| The Salberga prison, now being built in Sala, will be the largest correctional facility in Sweden when finished. Joinex is one of the principal suppliers to the project and will deliver over 300 specially-designed and reinforced wooden cell doors. This unique type of door has been thoroughly tested and certain parts of its construction remain secret. It’s obvious though that the Joinex doors have several advantages compared with cell doors made of steel.
”Above all, the wood contributes to a much softer and more humane environment without sacrificing security,” says the Project Manager from the Prison Administration Leif Bäckström, who has been part of the development team for the new cell doors.
Behind the doors is almost 10 years of cooperation between Joinex and the Prison Administration. It all started in the mid-90s when the Prison Administration was looking for prison and cell doors that could handle the acoustic demands better than the existing steel doors. This meant there were also high demands on fire resistance and security.
”Naturally, a cell door must be almost impossible to break out of, that’s why we’ve done so many tests with hydraulic and mechanical loading,” says Joinex Project Manager Bosse Nyström.
This successful result meant Joinex was entrusted even further by the Prison Administration. Their cell doors are today being used in most correctional facilities in the country.
”Joinex's interest and commitment to continuous development has been valuable. They’ve been just as good at delivering knowledge as supplying the products,” says Leif Bäckström from the Prison Administration.
In the case of Salberga, Joinex is using the breadth of its knowledge as well as the peak. In addition to the 330 cell doors, Joinex is supplying almost 700 “climate windows” plus 664 standard solid wood interior doors to the offices and other rooms.
Besides meeting specific product requirements there are also positive tendencies regarding the Prison Administration’s endeavours to create a better working and corrective environment at the facilities.
”Yes, there is a definite link between a good environment and reduced vandalism. Joinex is contributing to this end with its products and knowledge,” Bäckström concludes.
