Apartment doors from SSC in a class of their own
|
|
| House burglaries are continuing to rise in Sweden, and apartment doors are often the route burglars choose to break in. SSC is leading the way in shutting the door on burglars. SSC’s new steel-framed door construction has received European approval to resistance class 4. “This means the door will resist attack for ten minutes, including the use of a crowbar, axe or electric drill with tungsten carbide bit,” explains Sven-Agne Nilsson, test engineer at the Swedish National Testing and Research Institute (SP) in Borås. | SSC’s new door construction has also received type approval from SP’s subsidiary, Sitac, for its apartment door with wood frame. In this case the door has European approval to resistance class 3. “So the door will withstand attack for five minutes with tools such as crowbars, wedges and screwdrivers,” says Olle Johansson. | In addition to the new European standard, which came into effect in 2000, the Swedish standard for burglary protection is still in force. SSC has also obtained class three approval to the Swedish standard for break-in protection for its wood-framed and steel-framed doors. This means they can withstand ten minutes’ attack using tools such as a crowbars and chisels. “These approvals put us among the front runners in the European door market,” says Marcus Nyström, sales representative for SSC. He believes that demand for apartment doors will increase in the near future when the Swedish postal service stops delivering letters through letterboxes. “It will provide an opportunity for apartment owners to invest in new doors. From the point of view of break-in protection it’s especially important to replace doors in homes built before 1980, as they’re often lightly built,” says Marcus. “It’s just as important to invest in a good frame when you fit a strong door. Otherwise the burglar is likely to tear out the frame rather than breaking open the door,” concludes Sven-Agne Nilsson, adding that, without reinforcement, the lock and hinges are generally the weakest points of a door. | |
