At the end of January, the impressive Stockholm Waterfront development was completed with the opening of the congress centre and hotel. SSC supplied and fitted doors, panels and special fitments. “SSC are our “heroes” in this building development. They’ve stuck by us the whole time and solved all the problems in a fantastic way,” says Torbjörn Berglund, Project Manager at Jarl Asset Management, property developer for Stockholm Waterfront.

The Stockholm Waterfront development began in 2005 when the City of Stockholm asked investment and property development company Jarl Asset Management to come with ideas for developing the Klara post office terminal site. The terminal was due for demolition, offering the opportunity to build something new and exciting on the site adjacent to the Klaraberg viaduct. It wasn’t easy finding a good solution for the triangular plot. The architects, White, came up with the idea of dividing the site into three properties; a tall office building and a lower congress venue with a hotel sandwiched in between. Peab AB won the turn-key contract for the hotel and the site preparation for the hotel and congress venue. “Building Stockholm Waterfront put enormous demands on planning, risk assessment, and not least logistics, as it would take place in the heart of Stockholm,” explains Torbjörn Berglund. “To manage the logistics in an optimal fashion we demanded just-in-time deliveries of our suppliers,” adds Bengt Strandlund, Production Manager at Peab Sverige AB.
A supplier with capacity In consultation with Jarl Asset Management, Peab chose SSC to supply and fit special fixtures, doors and fire resistant walls and ceiling panels. “We sought a contractor with the right price and the capacity to tackle such a large project and SSC fit the bill perfectly,” says Bengt Strandlund. SSC Skellefteå AB’s CEO Peter Forsséll points out that Stockholm Waterfront was a prestige order for them that created a good number of jobs on the supply and fitment side. Thirty or so fitters were employed during the most intensive months. “Our Project Manager Ulf Andersson, his team and the fitters and workers in our factories have done a fantastic job that we are extremely proud of,” he says. “And it’s all run so smoothly, which is down to the excellent teamwork with the project management, Peab and White, the firm of architects,” adds Ulf Andersson. The office development, Waterfront Building, with 24,600 square metres of office space with room for 3,000 people, opened in December 2009. Four-star Radisson Blu Waterfront Hotel, with 414 rooms, opened on January 20th of this year at the same time as the Stockholm Waterfront Congress Centre, one of the largest meetings and events venues in the Nordics, opened for public viewing. The official opening of the congress centre, which, like the hotel, is run by the Rezidor Hotel Group, will take place this spring. The Stockholm Waterfront Congress Centre will raise Stockholm’s power of attraction as an international conference city significantly. The congress hall takes 3,000 delegates and also has a banqueting hall with room for 2,000 sitting guests. There are also plenty of other meeting rooms of various sizes with room for around 1,000 guests. |

Special solutions SSC has fitted 820 doors in Stockholm Waterfront. “To the congress centre we supplied fire resistant panels, reception desks, coffee stations and fitments in the audiovisual conference room,” says Peter Forsséll. There are many special solutions, such as walls with recessed lighting, and reception desks in an exciting combination of glass and wood. Bengt Strandlund and Torbjörn Berglund are both very satisfied with the finished product from SSC. “One thing that visitors and guests notice are the surfaces, which are in tip-top condition thanks to SSC’s efforts, concludes Torbjörn Berglund. |
