Open instead of closed. Light instead of dark. An environment that fosters participation instead of exclusion. These are a few of the targets set by the many schools dating from the ‘60s and ‘70s now undergoing refurbishment in Sweden. One good example is Slättängsskolan in Kristianstad which is presently being completely reconstructed. Joinex is putting its products and experience to work with the ambition of realising a better school environment.
Now that it’s time to refurbish and reconstruct Slättängsskolan, formerly Härlövsskolan, the plan is to do it properly. The school was originally built in 1971 in line with contemporary ideals. Today’s standards are something else.
“In a nutshell, there was a lot of concrete and a lot of dark spaces back then. The result is a feeling of confinement,” says Pelle Berg, headmaster and project coordinator on behalf of school management.
“We do exactly the opposite today, using open spaces that let in a lot of light. The schools allow more visual contact by using glass partitions, for example. And this feels really good. We will have a school environment where people can see each other and that promotes dialogue,” says Pelle.
It is clearly evident that environment is important. Slättängsskolan is a large school with a total of 500 students from pre-school up to ninth grade. Joinex also senses the growing national refurbishment need and has done so for quite some time.
"For our part, the one school contract follows on the heels of the other pretty much constantly. The past several years we’ve had deliveries for between three and four projects at a time all over the country. Given this situation, we’ve obviously acquired considerable experience in the field, which benefits us, the construction contractor and the end customer,” explains Roland Andersson, sales rep at Joinex.
Joinex supplies both glass partitions and doors to Slättängsskolan. And the products will be used throughout the entire school, from classrooms to common rooms like the library and student care facilities. Relocation will be carried out gradually during the spring semester and all students are expected to be onsite by the beginning of the autumn semester.
“It feels really good. And yet, we’re just talking about the city of Kristianstad. Another three schools are scheduled for refurbishment relatively immediately,” says Pelle Berg.
